November 16, 2012

I was recently contacted by a friend and well established LA film producer with a very interesting project.  During his time working in the high stress world of commercial video, Rob discovered sensory deprivation tanks, or floating.  The idea is this: you're enclosed in a light-proof and sound-proof tank where you float in 12 inches of highly salinated water that gives you neutral buoyancy and is the exact temperature of your skin.  The net effect is that you have no environmental stimulus.  From gravity to sound to light, it's all gone, freeing the mind and body to enjoy a deep sense of relaxation and stimulating creativity and meditative thought. So enamored with this process was Rob, that he decided to open a spa in Seattle dedicated to floating.  Rob is familiar with my fine art landscape photography, and contacted me in hopes that I might be able to apply similar renderings of the beauty of light and natural form, to people in water.  Intrigued by the challenge, I happily accepted the project.

Rob tracked down two wonderful and talented models, Diana and Cameron.  In the mean time, I constructed a shallow pool with lumber and an outdoor pond liner, rented a studio, painted a cyclorama black, bought a propane water heater and rounded up a handfull of my favorite lighting tools to create an environment that would mimic the feeling of blackness and infinite space found in a floating chamber.

I'm very pleased with the results, which are highly visible on the freshly launched website site for the spa.  Let me know what you think, and drop Rob a line if you're interested in trying this latest form of deep relaxation, I'm certainly on board.
