What is the art through adventure workshop?
Join photographer Scott Rinckenberger, professional snowboard athlete and survivalist Max Djenohan, and AMGA Certified ski guide Trevor Kostanich to explore the idea of Art Through Adventure. Through teaching and doing, we’ll cover the skills and techniques required to move safely and efficiently through an extremely rugged winter environment. Through movement, experimentation and collaboration, we’ll work with the landscape to create photography that seeks not just to record a moment in time, but to convey the true power, beauty and meaning that comes with bearing witness to the magic of gliding through an alpine landscape in the snow.
Designed to open artistic and athletic horizons, and to empower new ways of seeing and moving, this workshop is the smoothest way to slide from where you are to where you want to be.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The team is what sets this workshop apart. You’ll have the opportunity to tap into the knowledge of world class artists, creators, athletes and guides. Each person hosting this workshop brings a massive toolkit and broad experience, blurring boundaries and defying simple titles and definitions. You won’t find a more compelling group of people with whom to share a learning environment in the great outdoors.

Scott Rinckenberger
Scott Rinckenberger is a photographer and adventurer specialized in capturing some of the most pristine and wild places accessible under human power. As a lifelong mountain athlete, Scott’s photographs are steeped in an admiration for alpine ecosystems, a hallmark of his work. Skis, bikes, boots and climbing shoes are his primary modes of travel in these remote areas.
Scott’s work has been showcased in art exhibitions worldwide and has been featured by some of the world’s leading brands including Apple, REI, Patagonia, Red Bull, and MSR. His distinctively reductive compositions have been recognized with awards and honors from the Lucie International Photography Awards, Photo District News, Tokyo International Photo Awards, and more.

Trevor Kostanich
The path to becoming a ski guide is not always a linear one. Through three season-long sabbaticals in Jackson Hole, Valdez, Alaska and the Kullu Valley in the Indian Himalaya, Trevor learned he wanted to professionally share his love of moving safely through snowy mountains. He started guiding in 2010 and became a certified ski guide through the AMGA in 2018.
Trevor believes in the importance of continuous learning and positive experiences with a bias toward outcomes over objectives. His personal passion for exploring new terrain steers his style toward memorable adventures in the mountains, rather than just repeating the same old lines. Trevor values sustainability, access to public lands for recreation, and has an affinity for community resource management.

Max is also one of the most decorated survivalists in television history, and has worked with the Discovery Channel and NBC, Participating on ‘The First Man Out 3’, ‘Race to Survive Alaska’ and completing a running total of six ‘Naked and Afraid’ Challenges. He is now working on his own show with Love Nature.

Location
The Workshop is offered over three days at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington.
Unbeknownst to many, but celebrated by the initiated, the wilderness areas of Snoqualmie Pass provide some of the most accessible, scenic and challenging backcountry terrain in the lower 48.
While the comforts of civilization will greet us in our initial introductory session, and fine coffees and beers will help us start and end our adventures, we’ll focus our efforts on the the legendary backcountry destinations of the region with options including Snow Lake, Commonwealth Basin, Snoqualmie Mountain and more.
These mountains are complex, and the Cascade range at large is subject to volatile weather, so actual locations and itineraries will be determined in real-time based on conditions. You may take comfort in the fact that these decisions will be made by some of the most experienced specialists in this beautiful corner of the world.

We’ll be traveling through advanced ski touring terrain, moving for the vast majority of each day, carrying equipment for winter camping and photography, and sleeping outdoors in winter. A high degree of fitness will be required to allow for this experience to be comfortable and fun. But along the way you’ll learn countless tips and tricks to make your mountain movements more efficient and enjoyable.
In the Cascades, we refer to the third month of the year as Miracle March. It’s the month most likely to mix the magical elements of cold snow, frequent dumps and intermittent sunshine. That said, the mountains in winter are a dynamic setting and throughout a 24 hour period you may find temps ranging from as low as the mid-teens to as warm as 40+ degrees Fahrenheit. Snow, wind, sun and (hopefully not) rain are all potentially on the menu.
Breakfasts (2), lunches (3), dinners (2) and snacks are provided for all time out in the field. Please provide advance notice of any dietary restrictions and we will try our best to accommodate those. Food and beverages during the introductory session, the morning of day one, and the final evening are not-included, but we’ll line up great venues and options for purchase.
We’ll function under the belief that there are no bad conditions, only interesting ones. But, should heavy rain, extreme avalanche danger or other acts of nature make our plan untenable, we’ll first attempt to change locations, then resort to revising dates or cancelling entirely.
Reservation requires full payment at the time of booking and is fully refundable 60 days prior to arrival. A $1,000 cancellation fee is charged if cancelled 59-30 days prior to arrival. Full Payment is non-refundable if cancelled within 30 days of arrival.
